Working With Clients Who Say: “I Don’t Know”
Overview:
Clients who frequently respond with "I don't know" in therapy can present a unique clinical challenge. While these responses are often interpreted as resistance, avoidance, or a lack of engagement, they may instead reflect emotional overwhelm, ambivalence, cognitive distortions, trauma-related responses, difficulties with emotional awareness, or uncertainty about internal experiences. Without a framework for understanding the underlying function of these responses, clinicians may inadvertently increase pressure, overlook important clinical information, or miss opportunities for deeper therapeutic exploration.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in understanding and effectively responding to client "I don't know" statements through trauma-informed, relational, cognitive-behavioral, and solution-focused lenses. Attendees will explore the various meanings that may underlie these responses, including emotional avoidance, ambivalence, cognitive distortions, and challenges related to emotional identification and expression. Emphasis will be placed on strengthening the therapeutic alliance, utilizing active listening and reflective techniques, and applying evidence-based interventions that promote self-awareness, confidence, and decision-making.
Participants will learn practical strategies for exploring uncertainty, addressing barriers to insight, and helping clients move from confusion and indecision toward greater clarity and psychological flexibility. Through case examples and clinical application, attendees will develop skills to transform moments of uncertainty into meaningful opportunities for therapeutic growth and change.
Objectives:
Identify factors that may contribute to a client's repeated use of "I don't know" in therapy, including emotional overwhelm, ambivalence, cognitive distortions, trauma responses, and difficulties with emotional awareness.
Apply active listening, reflective responding, and open-ended questioning techniques to facilitate deeper client exploration and insight.
Utilize cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused interventions to address uncertainty, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and promote greater confidence and decision-making.
Implement trauma-informed and relational strategies that strengthen the therapeutic alliance and support clients in navigating ambiguity and self-exploration.

"I don’t know."
"I'm not sure."
"I haven’t really thought about it."
Most clinicians have experienced sessions where clients repeatedly respond with “I don’t know,” leaving the conversation feeling stalled and making it difficult to know how to move deeper.
But “I don’t know” is often more than avoidance. It can signal emotional overwhelm, uncertainty, shame, fear, disconnection, limited emotional language, or protective coping strategies.
This free training explores practical approaches for understanding what may be happening beneath “I don’t know” and how to respond in ways that strengthen the therapeutic process rather than create frustration or pressure.
