DIVERSITY, IDENTITY & CULTURAL HUMILITY

Working With Clients of Color Using a Relational Lens 3 CEUs

Overview:

Working with clients of color through a relational lens requires clinicians to move beyond symptom-focused interventions and consider how identity, culture, power, and systemic experiences shape both the client's life and the therapeutic relationship. Clients of color often navigate experiences related to racism, discrimination, microaggressions, cultural expectations, intersectional identities, and historical or systemic inequities that can influence trust, emotional expression, help-seeking behaviors, and engagement in treatment. When these experiences are overlooked, therapists may unintentionally contribute to feelings of invalidation, disconnection, or relational rupture within therapy.

This presentation introduces participants to the foundational principles of relational therapy and explores how these principles can be applied in culturally responsive clinical practice. Participants will examine the impact of culture, race, power, privilege, intersectionality, and lived experience on the therapeutic process while learning how therapist identity, countertransference, and implicit bias can influence clinical work. Emphasis will be placed on developing cultural humility, strengthening therapeutic alliance across differences, and recognizing opportunities for rupture and repair within multicultural therapeutic relationships.

Through case vignettes, discussion, and practical application, attendees will learn evidence-informed strategies to foster deeper connection, navigate difficult conversations related to race and identity, address power dynamics, and create therapeutic environments that promote trust, safety, and belonging. This training will support clinicians in developing greater relational awareness, multicultural competence, and confidence when working with diverse populations.
