Advanced Couples Case Formulation (3 CEU's)
ADVANCED / PREMIUM TRAININGS
Advanced Couples Case Formulation 3 CEUs
Overview:
Working with couples often involves navigating complex, overlapping dynamics that extend beyond surface-level communication issues. Partners may present with entrenched patterns of conflict, emotional disconnection, attachment injuries, and individual vulnerabilities that interact in ways that are difficult to untangle without a clear clinical framework. Without strong case formulation skills, treatment can become reactive, inconsistent, and less effective.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in developing advanced couples case formulation skills to bring clarity, structure, and direction to their work. Attendees will learn how to integrate multiple domains—including attachment patterns, communication cycles, emotional regulation, individual histories, and relational dynamics—into a cohesive understanding of the couple’s functioning. Emphasis will be placed on identifying interactional patterns, maintaining factors, and underlying vulnerabilities that drive conflict and disconnection.
Participants will explore practical frameworks and real-world case examples to strengthen their ability to conceptualize complex couples presentations and translate formulations into targeted, effective interventions. This training will support clinicians in making more intentional treatment decisions, managing challenging dynamics in session, and improving outcomes in couples therapy.
Objectives:
Analyze key components of advanced couples case formulation across relational, emotional, and individual domains.
Identify interactional patterns and maintaining factors that contribute to conflict and disconnection.
Apply structured case formulation to guide intervention planning and treatment direction in couples therapy.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This course provides licensed mental health professionals with an overview of advanced case formulation strategies for use in couples therapy. Participants will learn to integrate multiple clinical frameworks to understand relational dynamics and guide treatment planning. While various therapeutic approaches may be referenced, this training does not provide certification in any specific couples therapy modality and is not a substitute for formal training or supervision in specialized approaches such as emotionally focused therapy or Gottman Method therapy. Attendees are expected to apply the material within their professional scope of practice, ethical guidelines, and licensure requirements.
