CLINICAL SKILLS & INTERVENTIONS

Advanced Emotion Regulation Skills for Adults 2 CEUs

Overview:

Difficulties with emotion regulation are at the core of many clinical presentations, including anxiety, depression, trauma-related disorders, and interpersonal conflict. While many clients have basic awareness of their emotions, they often struggle with managing intensity, tolerating distress, and responding effectively in high-stress situations. Clinicians may find that without more advanced tools, clients cycle through the same patterns of reactivity, avoidance, or emotional shutdown despite ongoing treatment.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in strengthening their understanding and application of advanced emotion regulation skills for adult clients. Attendees will explore how emotional dysregulation develops and is maintained, including the role of nervous system activation, cognitive processes, and environmental triggers. The course will introduce practical, evidence-informed strategies drawn from approaches such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), with a focus on helping clients tolerate distress, regulate intensity, and respond more effectively to emotional experiences. Emphasis will be placed on moving beyond basic coping strategies to more nuanced interventions that support flexibility, resilience, and long-term change. Participants will leave with actionable tools to help clients navigate emotional experiences with greater control and stability.

Objectives:

  • Identify key factors that contribute to emotional dysregulation and how they present in adult clients.

  • Explain advanced emotion regulation strategies and their clinical application across common presenting concerns.

  • Apply practical techniques to support clients in tolerating distress, reducing reactivity, and responding more effectively to emotional experiences.

Scope and Limitations Disclosure

Attendees are expected to apply the material within their professional scope of practice, ethical guidelines, and clinical judgment.
