Clinical Approaches to Depression That Don’t Pathologize 2 CEUs

Overview:

Depression is one of the most common concerns in clinical practice, yet traditional approaches can sometimes overemphasize diagnosis and symptom reduction in ways that unintentionally pathologize clients’ lived experiences. For many individuals, depressive symptoms are not simply dysfunctions to be eliminated, but meaningful responses to loss, chronic stress, relational disconnection, systemic pressures, or unmet emotional needs. When clinicians rely solely on symptom-focused frameworks, they may overlook the context and function of depression, limiting opportunities for deeper engagement and sustainable change.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in applying clinical approaches to depression that are nuanced, contextual, and non-pathologizing. Attendees will explore how depression can be understood through relational, environmental, and somatic lenses, as well as how it may serve adaptive functions such as protection, withdrawal, or signaling the need for change. The course will address how to balance validation with intervention, reduce shame, and collaborate with clients in a way that supports agency and autonomy. Emphasis will be placed on integrating evidence-informed strategies—such as behavioral activation, emotion-focused interventions, and meaning-making—while maintaining respect for the client’s experience. Participants will leave with practical tools to engage clients in a way that fosters connection, reduces stigma, and supports meaningful therapeutic progress.

Objectives:

  • Identify ways in which traditional approaches to depression may unintentionally pathologize client experiences.

  • Explain alternative frameworks for understanding depression, including relational, contextual, and somatic perspectives.

  • Apply practical, non-pathologizing strategies to support engagement, emotional processing, and change in clients experiencing depression.

Scope and Limitations Disclosure

This course provides licensed mental health professionals with an overview of non-pathologizing approaches to working with depression. Participants will learn to integrate contextual, relational, and somatic perspectives into their clinical work. While evidence-informed strategies are discussed, this training does not replace formal training in specific treatment modalities and is not a substitute for medical evaluation or psychiatric care when indicated. Attendees are expected to apply the material within their professional scope of practice, ethical guidelines, and clinical judgment, and to refer out when appropriate.
