Gottman-Informed Interventions for Couples (3 CEUs)

Overview:

Couples often present to therapy with entrenched patterns of conflict, communication breakdown, and emotional disconnection that can be difficult to shift without structured, evidence-based interventions. The Gottman Method Couples Therapy offers a research-driven framework for understanding relationship dynamics, managing conflict, and strengthening emotional connection, grounded in decades of empirical study on what predicts relationship success and failure.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in applying Gottman-informed interventions within couples therapy to assess relationship functioning, interrupt maladaptive interaction patterns, and build healthier communication and connection. Attendees will explore key concepts such as the “Sound Relationship House,” the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and the role of friendship, conflict management, and shared meaning in long-term relationship stability. Emphasis will be placed on practical, evidence-based tools that clinicians can immediately integrate into sessions to help couples reduce conflict escalation, increase emotional attunement, and repair relational ruptures. Participants will leave with actionable strategies to enhance therapeutic effectiveness and support lasting change in couples work.

Objectives:

  • Explain core principles of the Gottman Method Couples Therapy and their application in clinical practice.

  • Identify maladaptive interaction patterns, including the Four Horsemen, and apply interventions to disrupt them.

  • Implement Gottman-informed strategies to strengthen communication, conflict management, and emotional connection in couples.
