Treating Anxiety Beyond CBT: Somatic & Relational Approaches 3 CEUs

Overview:

Anxiety is one of the most common presenting concerns in clinical practice, and while Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) offers effective tools for many clients, some individuals continue to experience persistent symptoms despite cognitive and behavioral interventions. For these clients, anxiety is often maintained not only by thought patterns, but also by nervous system dysregulation, unresolved emotional experiences, and relational dynamics that are not fully addressed through traditional CBT approaches.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in expanding their clinical approach to anxiety by integrating somatic and relational frameworks. Attendees will explore how anxiety manifests in the body, including patterns of hyperarousal, shutdown, and chronic tension, and how to work directly with physiological responses using body-based interventions. The course will also address the role of attachment and relational experiences in shaping anxiety, including how safety, co-regulation, and the therapeutic relationship can be used as tools for change. Emphasis will be placed on practical, in-session strategies that help clients regulate their nervous system, increase tolerance for internal experiences, and move beyond purely cognitive approaches. Participants will leave with tools to more effectively support clients whose anxiety requires a deeper, more integrated treatment approach.

Objectives:

  • Identify limitations of cognitive-only approaches to anxiety and recognize when alternative frameworks are indicated.

  • Explain how somatic and relational factors contribute to the development and maintenance of anxiety.

  • Apply practical, body-based and attachment-informed strategies to support nervous system regulation and reduce anxiety symptoms.

Scope and Limitations Disclosure

This course provides licensed mental health professionals with an overview of somatic and relational approaches to treating anxiety. Participants will learn to integrate body-based and attachment-informed strategies into their clinical work. While evidence-informed techniques are introduced, this training does not provide certification in specialized somatic therapies (e.g., Somatic Experiencing) or attachment-based modalities and is not a substitute for advanced training in these approaches. Attendees are expected to apply the material within their professional scope of practice, ethical guidelines, and clinical judgment.

Financial and Commercial Disclosure

The presenter has no relevant financial relationships or conflicts of interest to disclose. Any references to therapeutic models, interventions, or resources are provided solely for educational purposes. Participants are not required to purchase any additional materials to complete this course.
