Understanding the Nervous System in Therapy (2 CEU's)
CLINICAL SKILLS & INTERVENTIONS
Understanding the Nervous System in Therapy (2 CEUs)
Overview:
The nervous system plays a central role in how individuals experience, process, and respond to stress, trauma, and emotional stimuli, yet it is often underemphasized in traditional talk therapy approaches. Many clients present with symptoms such as anxiety, emotional overwhelm, shutdown, or reactivity that are rooted not only in cognitive patterns but in physiological states of dysregulation. Without an understanding of the nervous system, clinicians may struggle to effectively engage clients or facilitate meaningful change.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in understanding the foundational role of the nervous system in mental health and therapeutic work. Attendees will explore key concepts including the stress response, regulation and dysregulation, and the impact of the autonomic nervous system on behavior and emotional experience. Emphasis will be placed on practical, evidence-informed strategies to help clients recognize their physiological states, increase regulation, and build capacity for emotional processing. Participants will learn how to integrate nervous system-informed approaches into everyday practice to enhance engagement, reduce reactivity, and support more effective and sustainable therapeutic outcomes.
Objectives:
Explain the role of the nervous system in emotional and behavioral responses.
Identify signs of nervous system dysregulation in clients.
Apply practical strategies to support nervous system regulation in clinical practice.
Scope and Limitations Disclosure
This course provides licensed mental health professionals with an overview of the role of the nervous system in therapy, including foundational concepts related to regulation, dysregulation, and stress response. Participants will learn practical strategies to support nervous system regulation in clients. While concepts informed by neuroscience and approaches such as somatic and polyvagal-informed interventions are discussed, this training does not provide certification in any specific modality and is not a substitute for formal training in specialized somatic or trauma-focused treatments. Attendees are expected to apply the material within their professional scope of practice, ethical guidelines, and licensure requirements.
Financial and Commercial Disclosure
The presenter has no relevant financial relationships or conflicts of interest to disclose. Any references to therapeutic models, interventions, or resources are provided solely for educational purposes. Participants are not required to purchase any additional materials to complete this course.
