Working With Attachment Wounds in Therapy 3 CEUs

Overview:

Attachment wounds—often rooted in early relational experiences of inconsistency, neglect, betrayal, or loss—can significantly shape how individuals experience trust, connection, and emotional safety in adulthood. These wounds frequently present in therapy as patterns of fear, avoidance, reactivity, or difficulty with vulnerability, particularly within close relationships. Without a clear understanding of how attachment injuries manifest, clinicians may focus on surface-level symptoms rather than the underlying relational pain driving client behavior.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in identifying and working with attachment wounds across individual and relational contexts. Attendees will explore how attachment injuries develop and are maintained, including the role of early caregiving experiences, trauma, and repeated relational patterns. The course will address how attachment wounds present in session through emotional triggers, defensive responses, and interpersonal dynamics, and how clinicians can respond in ways that promote safety and repair. Emphasis will be placed on using an attachment-informed lens to assess client needs, regulate emotional intensity, and support corrective emotional experiences within the therapeutic relationship. Participants will leave with practical tools to move beyond symptom management and address the deeper relational drivers of distress.

Objectives:

  • Identify common presentations of attachment wounds and how they manifest in individual and relational therapy.

  • Explain the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of attachment injuries.

  • Apply practical, attachment-informed strategies to support emotional regulation, relational safety, and therapeutic repair.

Scope and Limitations Disclosure

This course provides licensed mental health professionals with an overview of working with attachment wounds in clinical practice. Participants will learn to recognize and respond to attachment-related patterns using evidence-informed strategies. While attachment-based approaches are discussed, this training does not provide certification in specific modalities (e.g., Emotionally Focused Therapy) and is not a substitute for advanced training in specialized attachment-focused interventions. Attendees are expected to apply the material within their professional scope of practice, ethical guidelines, and clinical judgment.

The presenter has no relevant financial relationships or conflicts of interest to disclose. Any references to therapeutic models, interventions, or resources are provided solely for educational purposes. Participants are not required to purchase any additional materials to complete this course.
