Infidelity: Clinical Assessment & Treatment Planning 3 CEUs

Overview:

Infidelity is a complex and emotionally charged issue that frequently presents in clinical practice, often involving intense distress, betrayal trauma, and significant relational instability. Clients may present individually or as couples, with varying goals ranging from reconciliation to separation. Clinicians are often challenged to navigate competing narratives, manage strong emotional reactions, and maintain neutrality while supporting both individual and relational healing. Without a structured approach, providers may inadvertently align with one partner, overlook underlying dynamics, or move too quickly into interventions without adequate assessment.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in conducting thorough clinical assessments and developing effective, individualized treatment plans in cases involving infidelity. Attendees will explore the different types and meanings of infidelity, including emotional, physical, and digital betrayals, and how these impact attachment, trust, and relational functioning. The course will address assessment of relationship history, patterns of communication, underlying vulnerabilities, and readiness for repair. Emphasis will be placed on establishing safety, managing disclosure, and determining appropriate treatment pathways, whether working with individuals or couples. Participants will leave with practical tools to assess infidelity-related cases, create structured treatment plans, and support clients in navigating repair, rebuilding trust, or making informed decisions about the future of the relationship.

Objectives:

  • Identify different types and clinical presentations of infidelity and their impact on individuals and relationships.

  • Explain key components of comprehensive assessment and treatment planning in cases involving infidelity.

  • Apply practical strategies to support stabilization, decision-making, and treatment direction based on client goals and readiness.

Scope and Limitations Disclosure

This course provides licensed mental health professionals with an overview of clinical assessment and treatment planning in cases involving infidelity. Participants will learn strategies to assess relational dynamics, identify treatment goals, and develop structured interventions. While evidence-informed approaches are discussed, this training does not provide certification in specific couples therapy modalities (e.g., EFT, Gottman Method) and is not a substitute for advanced training in specialized relationship therapy. Attendees are expected to apply the material within their professional scope of practice, ethical guidelines, and licensure requirements.

Financial and Commercial Disclosure

The presenter has no relevant financial relationships or conflicts of interest to disclose. Any references to therapeutic models, interventions, or resources are provided solely for educational purposes. Participants are not required to purchase any additional materials to complete this course.
