Sex Therapy Basics for Non-Sex Therapists 3 CEUs

Overview:

Concerns related to sex and intimacy are common in clinical practice, yet many clinicians feel underprepared or uncomfortable addressing these topics with clients. Issues such as desire discrepancies, sexual dysfunction, performance anxiety, and the impact of trauma or relationship dynamics on intimacy often go unassessed or are addressed superficially. Without foundational knowledge and confidence, providers may unintentionally avoid these conversations, miss clinically relevant information, or reinforce stigma and shame.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will introduce clinicians to the foundational concepts of sex therapy within the scope of general mental health practice. Attendees will explore how to assess sexual concerns, initiate and navigate conversations about sex in a respectful and clinically appropriate manner, and understand common sexual issues across individuals and couples. The course will also address the impact of cultural, relational, and psychological factors on sexual functioning, as well as the role of consent, communication, and boundaries. Emphasis will be placed on staying within scope of practice, identifying when to refer to specialized sex therapists, and integrating basic interventions that support client awareness and communication. Participants will leave with practical tools to confidently address sexual concerns in a way that is ethical, inclusive, and clinically effective.

Objectives:

  • Identify common sexual concerns and how they present in individual and couples therapy.

  • Explain foundational assessment strategies and communication techniques for addressing sexual topics in clinical practice.

  • Apply practical, scope-appropriate interventions and determine when referral to specialized sex therapy is indicated.
