Faith, Spirituality, and Mental Health (2 CEU's)
DIVERSITY, IDENTITY & CULTURAL HUMILITY
Faith, Spirituality, and Mental Health 2 CEUs
Overview:
Faith and spirituality can play a significant role in how clients understand themselves, cope with stress, and make meaning of their experiences. For some, spiritual beliefs serve as a source of resilience, community, and hope; for others, they may be associated with conflict, guilt, or trauma. Clinicians are often underprepared to navigate these dynamics, leading to avoidance of spiritual topics or difficulty integrating them effectively into treatment.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in understanding the intersection of faith, spirituality, and mental health within clinical practice. Attendees will explore how spiritual and religious beliefs influence identity, coping, and psychological functioning, as well as how these factors may support or complicate the therapeutic process. Emphasis will be placed on recognizing the diversity of spiritual experiences and the importance of approaching these topics with sensitivity and openness.
Participants will learn practical, evidence-informed strategies to assess and integrate clients’ spiritual and religious beliefs into therapy when appropriate, while maintaining ethical boundaries and respect for diverse perspectives. This training will equip clinicians with tools to engage in meaningful conversations around faith and spirituality, support clients in resolving spiritual conflicts, and incorporate these dimensions into a holistic approach to care.
Objectives:
Analyze the role of faith and spirituality in clients’ mental health and coping processes.
Identify how spiritual beliefs can both support and complicate clinical work.
Apply strategies to assess and integrate spirituality into therapy in an ethical and culturally responsive manner.
