DIVERSITY, IDENTITY & CULTURAL HUMILITY

Supporting Immigrant & First-Gen Clients 2 CEUs

Overview:

Immigrant and first-generation clients often navigate complex and intersecting challenges related to identity, cultural expectations, family dynamics, and systemic barriers. These experiences may include acculturation stress, intergenerational conflict, language barriers, discrimination, and pressure to balance multiple cultural identities. Such factors can significantly impact mental health, relationships, and engagement in therapy. Without a culturally responsive and context-informed approach, clinicians may overlook key aspects of these clients’ lived experiences.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in understanding and effectively supporting immigrant and first-generation clients. Attendees will explore the psychological, relational, and systemic factors that shape these clients’ experiences, including the impact of migration, family roles, and cultural values. Emphasis will be placed on understanding identity development, navigating intergenerational differences, and recognizing the influence of systemic stressors on mental health.

Participants will learn practical, evidence-informed strategies to strengthen therapeutic alliance, address culturally specific challenges, and support clients in balancing multiple identities and expectations. This training will equip clinicians with tools to provide more responsive, culturally attuned, and effective care for immigrant and first-generation populations.

Objectives:

  • Analyze the psychological and relational factors impacting immigrant and first-generation clients.

  • Identify common challenges related to identity, acculturation, and intergenerational dynamics.

  • Apply culturally responsive strategies to support engagement, coping, and integration of multiple identities.
