Avoiding Burnout While Maintaining Ethical Care 2 CEUs

Overview:

Burnout is increasingly prevalent among mental health professionals, impacting not only clinician well-being but also the quality, consistency, and ethical integrity of care provided to clients. Chronic stress, high caseloads, emotional fatigue, and systemic pressures can impair clinical judgment, blur professional boundaries, and increase the risk of ethical missteps. Without intentional strategies to manage burnout, clinicians may unknowingly compromise both their effectiveness and their adherence to ethical standards.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in understanding the intersection between clinician burnout and ethical practice. Attendees will explore how burnout manifests in clinical work, including its impact on decision-making, boundaries, documentation, and client engagement. Core ethical principles related to self-care, competence, and professional responsibility will be examined, alongside the role of systemic factors such as productivity demands and organizational culture. Emphasis will be placed on practical, sustainable strategies to prevent and address burnout while maintaining high-quality, ethically sound care. Participants will leave with actionable tools to strengthen resilience, recognize early warning signs, and uphold ethical standards without sacrificing their own well-being.

Objectives:

  • Identify common signs and stages of burnout and their impact on clinical effectiveness and ethical decision-making.

  • Explain the ethical responsibilities related to clinician self-care, competence, and maintaining professional standards.

  • Apply practical strategies to prevent burnout and maintain ethical, high-quality care in demanding clinical environments.
