Termination Done Well: Ethical & Clinical Considerations 2 CEUs

Overview:

Termination is a critical yet often overlooked phase of the therapeutic process, carrying significant clinical, ethical, and emotional implications for both clients and providers. When handled poorly, termination can lead to client harm, feelings of abandonment, ethical complaints, and disrupted continuity of care. Despite its importance, many clinicians receive limited guidance on how to approach termination intentionally, particularly in complex situations such as client dropout, premature ending, clinician-initiated termination, or external constraints (e.g., insurance changes, relocation).

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in navigating the complexities of termination with clarity, intention, and ethical integrity. Attendees will explore different types of termination, including planned, unplanned, and forced endings, and examine the clinical and ethical considerations associated with each. The course will address how to assess readiness for termination, manage client reactions, and maintain appropriate boundaries throughout the process. Emphasis will be placed on documentation, continuity of care, and strategies to reduce risk while supporting meaningful closure. Participants will leave with practical tools to conduct termination in a way that honors the therapeutic relationship, supports client progress, and aligns with ethical and professional standards.

Objectives:

  • Identify different types of termination and the clinical and ethical considerations associated with each.

  • Explain best practices for managing the termination process, including assessing readiness and addressing client responses.

  • Apply practical strategies for documenting termination and ensuring continuity of care in an ethical and clinically sound manner.
