HIGH-RISK & CLINICAL EDGE CASES
Complex Trauma in High-Achieving Professionals – 2 CEUs

Overview:
Many individuals with complex trauma histories develop patterns of exceptional achievement, productivity, caregiving, perfectionism, and over-functioning that allow them to succeed professionally while concealing significant emotional distress. High-achieving professionals often present as capable, composed, ambitious, and highly self-sufficient; however, beneath external success may exist chronic shame, hypervigilance, relational difficulties, burnout, emotional disconnection, identity struggles, and nervous system patterns rooted in developmental trauma. Because these clients often appear stable and high functioning, trauma symptoms may be overlooked or mistaken for personality traits, work ethic, or adaptive coping.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine the unique ways complex trauma can manifest in high-achieving professionals whose success may mask underlying emotional and relational struggles. Attendees will explore how early attachment disruptions, chronic stress, parentification, emotional neglect, and adverse developmental experiences can contribute to perfectionism, over-responsibility, work-driven identity formation, people-pleasing, and difficulties with vulnerability or rest. The course will address common clinical presentations including chronic anxiety, burnout, imposter experiences, emotional numbing, relationship challenges, and achievement patterns maintained by fear rather than fulfillment. Participants will learn practical strategies for identifying hidden trauma indicators, navigating resistance related to control and self-sufficiency, and implementing trauma-informed interventions that support emotional awareness, nervous system regulation, and sustainable functioning. Through clinical examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain tools for effectively treating clients whose trauma histories may remain hidden behind success.

Objectives:

  1. Identify common ways complex trauma may manifest in high-achieving and professionally successful clients.

  2. Recognize trauma-related patterns including perfectionism, over-functioning, emotional avoidance, and identity organization around achievement.

  3. Apply trauma-informed assessment and intervention strategies that support emotional processing, regulation, and sustainable functioning.
