Couples Where One Partner Is in Individual Therapy and the Other Isn’t – 2 CEUs
Overview:
Differences in therapeutic involvement can significantly influence relationship dynamics and create unique challenges within couples work. Therapists increasingly encounter couples in which one partner has spent months or years engaged in individual therapy while the other has had little or no therapeutic experience. The partner participating in therapy may demonstrate greater familiarity with emotional language, insight, boundaries, attachment concepts, or psychological frameworks, while the other partner may feel intimidated, defensive, resistant, misunderstood, or “behind.” These dynamics can create power imbalances, communication challenges, differing expectations for growth, and concerns that therapy itself has become part of the relationship conflict.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will explore practical and relational approaches for working with couples in which therapeutic exposure and emotional development appear unequal. Attendees will examine how differences in insight, self-awareness, emotional literacy, and familiarity with therapeutic concepts may affect relationship functioning. The course will address common clinical challenges including perceived emotional superiority, resentment, pressure to change, therapy language conflicts, shifting identities within relationships, and concerns that one partner is evolving faster than the other. Participants will learn strategies for maintaining therapeutic neutrality, reducing shame and defensiveness, addressing power imbalances, and helping partners translate insight into relational connection rather than polarization. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for managing a presentation increasingly encountered in modern couples practice.
Objectives:
Identify relational dynamics and treatment challenges that emerge when therapeutic involvement differs significantly between partners.
Recognize power imbalances, emotional literacy differences, and therapy-related dynamics that may contribute to relationship distress.
Apply practical interventions that support neutrality, emotional connection, and productive couples treatment.
