Cultural Guilt vs Personal Values: Clinical Interventions – 2 CEUs
Overview:
Many clients experience internal conflict when personal goals, beliefs, relationships, or life decisions begin to differ from cultural, familial, or community expectations. Decisions involving career paths, romantic relationships, parenting, independence, religion, caregiving responsibilities, boundaries, sexuality, or lifestyle choices can create significant emotional tension when personal values appear incompatible with deeply rooted cultural messages. Clients often struggle with guilt, shame, anxiety, grief, fear of disappointing loved ones, or concerns about loyalty and belonging. Therapists may unintentionally frame these conflicts as simple boundary issues or autonomy struggles without recognizing the broader cultural and intergenerational factors involved.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will explore culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches for working with clients experiencing conflict between cultural guilt and personal values. Attendees will examine how collectivist values, family expectations, intergenerational survival narratives, migration experiences, identity development, and cultural messaging shape emotional experiences and decision-making. The course will address common clinical presentations including chronic guilt, emotional over-responsibility, people-pleasing, identity conflict, role strain, and fears related to rejection or loss of belonging. Participants will learn practical strategies for helping clients differentiate guilt rooted in value violations from guilt rooted in conditioning, relational expectations, or internalized cultural messages. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for supporting clients in navigating difficult decisions while honoring both cultural complexity and personal authenticity.
Objectives:
Identify cultural, familial, and intergenerational factors that contribute to guilt and value-based conflicts in clinical practice.
Recognize distinctions between culturally conditioned guilt, shame, and personally meaningful value systems.
Apply culturally responsive interventions that support emotional processing, values clarification, and client autonomy.
