Decision Fatigue in Therapists Seeing High Caseloads (2 CEU's)
HIGH-RISK & CLINICAL EDGE CASES
Decision Fatigue in Therapists Seeing High Caseloads – 2 CEUs
Overview:
Mental health clinicians make hundreds of decisions each day, many of which occur rapidly and with significant emotional, ethical, and clinical consequences. Therapists working with high caseloads often move continuously between complex presentations, risk assessments, documentation demands, treatment planning decisions, relational dynamics, administrative responsibilities, and competing client needs. Over time, repeated decision-making demands can create cognitive overload that affects attention, judgment, emotional availability, and overall clinical functioning. Unlike overt burnout, decision fatigue may emerge subtly through increased indecisiveness, emotional numbing, irritability, mental fog, shortened patience, overreliance on routine interventions, or avoidance of complex clinical choices.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine practical and clinically informed approaches for understanding and addressing decision fatigue among therapists managing high caseloads. Attendees will explore how chronic cognitive demands, emotional labor, productivity pressures, perfectionism, compassion fatigue, and workplace systems contribute to diminished decision-making capacity over time. The course will address common signs that decision fatigue may be affecting clinical work, including documentation delays, increased avoidance, treatment rigidity, reduced creativity, and changes in therapeutic presence. Participants will learn practical strategies for improving awareness of cognitive strain, reducing unnecessary decision burden, strengthening professional sustainability, and creating structures that support more consistent and effective clinical functioning. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for managing a frequently overlooked yet increasingly relevant challenge within modern mental health practice.
Objectives:
Identify cognitive, emotional, and behavioral indicators of decision fatigue among clinicians managing high caseloads.
Recognize professional and systemic factors that contribute to diminished decision-making capacity over time.
Apply practical strategies that support cognitive sustainability, reduce decision burden, and strengthen clinical effectiveness.
