High-Conflict Co-Parenting With Personality Disorder Traits – 4 CEUs
Overview:
High-conflict co-parenting cases often involve chronic disputes, repeated crises, communication breakdowns, rigid interpersonal patterns, and ongoing struggles that extend far beyond typical post-separation conflict. In some situations, one or both parents may display personality-related traits such as emotional volatility, black-and-white thinking, intense reactivity, interpersonal instability, control struggles, manipulation, chronic distrust, or difficulties with emotional regulation. These patterns can significantly complicate co-parenting relationships, increase stress on children, and create challenging dynamics for clinicians attempting to maintain neutrality and support family functioning. Therapists working in these cases frequently encounter triangulation, alliance pressures, intense emotional reactions, and safety concerns that require careful clinical management.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine practical and ethically grounded approaches for working with high-conflict co-parenting situations involving personality-related traits. Attendees will explore how attachment disruptions, trauma histories, emotional regulation difficulties, and enduring interpersonal patterns may contribute to conflict escalation and co-parenting instability. The course will address common clinical presentations including repeated litigation, loyalty conflicts, emotional manipulation, rigid communication patterns, parental alienation concerns, boundary violations, and challenges involving children caught within chronic conflict systems. Participants will learn practical strategies for maintaining neutrality, reducing clinician splitting dynamics, supporting healthy boundaries, strengthening communication interventions, and protecting child-centered treatment goals. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain tools for navigating one of family therapy’s most complex and emotionally demanding clinical presentations.
Objectives:
Identify personality-related traits and relational patterns commonly observed in high-conflict co-parenting dynamics.
Recognize clinical challenges including splitting, triangulation, alliance pressures, and child-centered concerns.
