Intergenerational Trauma in Immigrant Families (Clinical Interventions) (3 CEU's)
TRAUMA, CULTURE & RELATIONAL DYNAMICS
Intergenerational Trauma in Immigrant Families (Clinical Interventions) – 3 CEUs
Overview:
Many immigrant families carry histories of adversity that extend beyond individual experiences and span generations. War, political violence, displacement, migration stress, poverty, family separation, discrimination, acculturation pressures, and survival-based parenting patterns can profoundly shape family systems and relational functioning. These experiences often influence emotional expression, attachment, family roles, communication styles, beliefs about mental health, and expectations regarding responsibility, loyalty, and identity. While many immigrant families demonstrate remarkable resilience and strength, unresolved intergenerational trauma may emerge in therapy through conflict, emotional distance, parent-child tension, shame, perfectionism, over-responsibility, or difficulties navigating cultural identity.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will explore trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches for understanding and treating intergenerational trauma within immigrant family systems. Attendees will examine how migration experiences and systemic factors influence family dynamics across generations and how trauma can be transmitted through narratives, relational patterns, emotional modeling, parenting approaches, and survival-based adaptations. The course will address common clinical themes including parentification, identity conflict, acculturation gaps, cultural loyalty struggles, emotional suppression, and differing expectations between generations. Participants will learn practical interventions for assessing intergenerational patterns, increasing cultural humility, facilitating meaningful family dialogue, and supporting healing while honoring cultural values and lived experiences. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for providing more effective and culturally responsive care to immigrant families.
Objectives:
Identify factors that contribute to the development and transmission of intergenerational trauma within immigrant family systems.
Recognize common relational and clinical presentations influenced by migration experiences, acculturation stress, and survival adaptations.
Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive interventions that support family understanding, communication, and healing.
