Rebuilding Trust When There Was Emotional (Not Physical) Infidelity – 3 CEUs
Overview:
Emotional infidelity often creates profound relational injury despite the absence of physical sexual involvement. Partners may experience deep feelings of betrayal, secrecy, emotional abandonment, insecurity, humiliation, and loss of safety when a significant emotional connection develops outside the primary relationship. Because emotional affairs can involve ambiguity regarding definitions, boundaries, and perceived severity, couples frequently enter therapy with vastly different understandings of what occurred. One partner may view the experience as devastating betrayal while the other minimizes the impact, insists “nothing physical happened,” or struggles to understand the depth of relational injury. These differing perspectives can create significant challenges for therapists attempting to maintain neutrality and facilitate meaningful repair.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine practical and relational approaches for treating couples recovering from emotional infidelity and attachment injuries. Attendees will explore factors that contribute to emotional affairs, including unmet attachment needs, emotional loneliness, boundary erosion, life stressors, unresolved relational dissatisfaction, digital communication patterns, and gradual emotional intimacy shifts. The course will address common clinical challenges including disagreement over definitions, repeated trust ruptures, obsessive questioning, hypervigilance, defensiveness, guilt, shame, and differing timelines for healing. Participants will learn practical strategies for assessing affair dynamics, facilitating accountability and emotional processing, restoring emotional safety, and supporting trust rebuilding without minimizing the complexity of betrayal recovery. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for navigating one of couples therapy’s most emotionally charged and nuanced treatment presentations.
Objectives:
Identify relational and psychological factors that contribute to emotional infidelity and emotional affair development.
Recognize common treatment challenges including differing betrayal narratives, attachment injuries, and trust disruption patterns.
