HIGH-RISK & CLINICAL EDGE CASES
Therapist Burnout That Doesn’t Show Up as Exhaustion – 2 CEUs

Overview:
Burnout in mental health professionals is often associated with fatigue, emotional depletion, and feeling overwhelmed. However, therapist burnout does not always present as obvious exhaustion. Many clinicians continue functioning at high levels while experiencing more subtle signs including emotional numbness, cynicism, reduced empathy, irritability, avoidance of certain clients, increased detachment, dread before sessions, decreased curiosity, over-functioning, perfectionism, or a growing sense of disconnection from the work itself. Because these presentations may resemble personality changes, stress responses, or normal fluctuations in motivation, therapists often fail to recognize burnout until significant impairment, dissatisfaction, or emotional distress has already developed.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will explore practical and clinically grounded approaches for identifying and addressing less visible manifestations of therapist burnout. Attendees will examine how chronic exposure to emotional labor, compassion fatigue, administrative burden, unresolved countertransference, high productivity demands, perfectionism, and workplace culture contribute to burnout processes that may remain hidden beneath outward functioning. The course will address common misconceptions that prevent clinicians from recognizing burnout and explore how subtle shifts in emotional engagement, clinical decision-making, and therapeutic presence may signal growing strain. Participants will learn practical strategies for increasing self-awareness, identifying early warning signs, strengthening professional sustainability, and developing interventions that support long-term clinical wellbeing without relying solely on traditional self-care messaging. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for recognizing and responding to an increasingly common professional challenge.

Objectives:

  1. Identify subtle emotional, cognitive, and behavioral signs of therapist burnout that may occur without overt exhaustion.

  2. Recognize professional and personal factors that contribute to hidden or delayed burnout presentations.

  3. Apply practical strategies that support self-awareness, professional sustainability, and prevention of long-term clinical impairment.
