HIGH-RISK & CLINICAL EDGE CASES
Therapist Identity Shifts When Moving Into Private Practice – 2 CEUs

Overview:
Transitioning into private practice often involves much more than a change in employment setting. For many clinicians, the move from agency work, community mental health, hospitals, group practices, or institutional systems into private practice creates significant shifts in professional identity, confidence, values, and self-perception. Therapists may experience excitement alongside anxiety, grief, imposter feelings, isolation, guilt, financial fears, role confusion, or uncertainty about what kind of clinician they want to become. Questions such as “Am I experienced enough?”, “Can I really do this on my own?”, or “Who am I as a therapist outside of an agency system?” often emerge during this transition. Despite the frequency of these experiences, many clinicians are unprepared for the emotional and psychological impact of this professional shift.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine practical and clinically grounded approaches for understanding therapist identity development during transitions into private practice. Attendees will explore how professional socialization, perfectionism, comparison, financial stress, attachment dynamics, workplace culture, and personal values influence the experience of leaving structured systems. The course will address common challenges including fear of visibility, self-doubt, loneliness, changes in confidence, boundary shifts, productivity pressures, identity uncertainty, and evolving definitions of professional success. Participants will learn practical strategies for strengthening self-awareness, navigating identity transitions, reducing imposter experiences, and building sustainable professional identities aligned with personal and clinical values. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain tools for navigating one of the most significant and emotionally complex transitions in a therapist’s career.

Objectives:

  1. Identify emotional, relational, and professional factors that contribute to therapist identity shifts during transitions into private practice.

  2. Recognize common experiences including imposter feelings, role confusion, isolation, and evolving professional values.

  3. Apply practical strategies that support identity development, self-awareness, and sustainable professional adjustment.
