TRAUMA, CULTURE & RELATIONAL DYNAMICS
Therapy With Clients Who Code-Switch Across Environments – 2 CEUs

Overview:
Many clients regularly shift aspects of their language, behavior, appearance, emotional expression, communication style, or identity presentation depending on their environment. Clients may alter how they speak at work, within family systems, around peers, in academic settings, within cultural communities, or across racial and social contexts in order to maintain safety, belonging, acceptance, or opportunity. While code-switching can function as an adaptive and highly sophisticated survival strategy, clients may also experience emotional exhaustion, identity fragmentation, hypervigilance, burnout, authenticity struggles, or chronic pressure associated with constantly monitoring how they present themselves. Therapists may unintentionally interpret these experiences as inconsistency, avoidance, or identity confusion without recognizing broader cultural and systemic influences.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will explore culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches for working with clients who frequently code-switch across environments. Attendees will examine the historical, social, relational, and systemic factors that contribute to code-switching behaviors while exploring how race, culture, identity, workplace experiences, immigration history, and belonging concerns influence adaptive presentation patterns. The course will address common clinical themes including emotional fatigue, belonging wounds, authenticity concerns, identity strain, perfectionism, safety-seeking behaviors, and experiences of invisibility or disconnection. Participants will learn practical strategies for exploring the emotional meaning of code-switching, supporting identity integration, reducing shame, and helping clients build greater flexibility and self-understanding without pathologizing adaptive coping strategies. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for addressing an increasingly relevant area of contemporary clinical practice.

Objectives:

  1. Identify psychological, cultural, and systemic factors that contribute to code-switching across environments.

  2. Recognize common emotional and clinical presentations associated with chronic code-switching experiences.

  3. Apply culturally responsive interventions that support identity integration, emotional processing, and adaptive functioning.
