TRAUMA, CULTURE & RELATIONAL DYNAMICS
Treating Clients Who Romanticize Their Trauma History – 2 CEUs

Overview:
Clinicians occasionally encounter clients who describe trauma experiences in ways that appear idealized, identity-defining, or emotionally glorified. Clients may frame trauma as the source of their uniqueness, strength, depth, creativity, resilience, or relational identity while struggling to imagine who they would be without it. Others may unconsciously romanticize suffering through narratives influenced by social media, relational dynamics, survival adaptations, or longstanding identity structures built around adversity. While trauma can lead to growth, meaning-making, and resilience, therapists may face clinical challenges when trauma becomes intertwined with self-worth, belonging, purpose, or identity in ways that complicate healing and change.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine trauma-informed approaches for understanding and treating clients who romanticize aspects of their trauma history. Attendees will explore the psychological functions these narratives may serve, including identity preservation, emotional protection, attachment needs, validation seeking, meaning-making, and fear of loss associated with healing. The course will address the distinction between adaptive post-traumatic growth and trauma-centered identity organization while examining how clinicians can avoid pathologizing resilience or invalidating the significance of clients’ experiences. Participants will learn practical strategies for exploring underlying needs, fostering broader identity development, strengthening emotional processing, and helping clients build lives that extend beyond survival narratives. Through clinical examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for navigating a nuanced and increasingly relevant area of trauma treatment.

Objectives:

  1. Identify psychological and relational factors that may contribute to trauma-centered or romanticized narratives.

  2. Differentiate post-traumatic growth from identity patterns that may inadvertently maintain trauma-related functioning.

  3. Apply trauma-informed interventions that support identity expansion, emotional processing, and healing beyond trauma narratives.
