Treating Couples Where One Partner Has Already Emotionally Checked Out – 3 CEUs
Overview:
Couples sometimes enter treatment at a point where emotional disconnection has already progressed far beyond recurring conflict or communication difficulties. One partner may arrive motivated to repair the relationship while the other appears detached, indifferent, withdrawn, or uncertain whether they wish to continue. Therapists often encounter statements such as “I’m done,” “I’ve already grieved this relationship,” or “I’m only here because they wanted me to come.” These presentations can create significant clinical challenges as therapists attempt to assess motivation, maintain neutrality, and determine whether treatment goals involve reconciliation, discernment, or separation. Clinicians may also experience pressure to “save” the relationship or frustration when therapeutic efforts appear unevenly invested.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine practical and relational approaches for working with couples in which one partner has emotionally disengaged or significantly withdrawn from the relationship. Attendees will explore contributing factors including chronic unresolved conflict, attachment injuries, betrayal, emotional burnout, resentment accumulation, avoidance patterns, and longstanding unmet needs. The course will address the distinction between emotional exhaustion, protective withdrawal, ambivalence, and definitive relational disengagement while examining common therapist pitfalls that may intensify polarization. Participants will learn practical strategies for assessing readiness, facilitating honest conversations, managing differing levels of investment, and supporting thoughtful clinical decision-making regarding repair, discernment, or termination of treatment. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for navigating one of couples therapy’s most emotionally complex and high-stakes presentations.
Objectives:
Identify relational factors that contribute to emotional disengagement and withdrawal within couples therapy presentations.
Differentiate emotional exhaustion, protective distancing, ambivalence, and relationship disengagement.
