Treating Racial Trauma in Corporate/Workplace Contexts (3 CEU's)
TRAUMA, CULTURE & RELATIONAL DYNAMICS
Treating Racial Trauma in Corporate/Workplace Contexts – 3 CEUs
Overview:
Workplace environments can become significant sources of psychological distress for individuals experiencing racism, discrimination, tokenization, exclusion, chronic microaggressions, or pressures related to navigating systems of inequity. Clients may present with anxiety, hypervigilance, burnout, emotional exhaustion, self-doubt, perfectionism, identity strain, anger, grief, or symptoms that resemble trauma responses following repeated racialized experiences in professional settings. Because workplace-related racial stress is often chronic, cumulative, and difficult to escape, clinicians may struggle to conceptualize these experiences beyond traditional occupational stress models. Without careful clinical awareness, therapists risk minimizing experiences, over-pathologizing adaptive responses, or overlooking broader systemic realities affecting client wellbeing.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches for working with clients experiencing racial trauma within corporate and workplace environments. Attendees will explore the psychological impact of chronic workplace discrimination, code-switching, identity-based stress, isolation, stereotype pressure, tokenization, and invisible labor. The course will address how systemic inequities and organizational dynamics contribute to emotional and physiological responses while examining common clinical pitfalls that may unintentionally invalidate clients’ experiences. Participants will learn practical strategies for assessment, validation, identity support, emotional processing, nervous system regulation, and helping clients navigate decisions regarding advocacy, boundaries, and workplace wellbeing. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for effectively treating a growing and clinically significant area of mental health practice.
Objectives:
Identify psychological and physiological impacts of racial trauma occurring within workplace and corporate environments.
Recognize systemic, relational, and cultural factors that contribute to workplace-based racial stress and trauma responses.
Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive interventions that support emotional processing, regulation, and client empowerment.
