Working With Clients Who Remind You of Your Own Family (2 CEU's)
HIGH-RISK & CLINICAL EDGE CASES
Working With Clients Who Remind You of Your Own Family – 2 CEUs
Overview:
Therapists inevitably bring their own histories, attachment experiences, and relational templates into the therapy room. At times, clinicians may encounter clients whose personalities, communication styles, emotional needs, behaviors, or relational dynamics strongly resemble significant people from their own lives. Clients may remind therapists of parents, siblings, partners, children, or other family members in ways that evoke powerful emotional responses including protectiveness, irritation, guilt, frustration, over-identification, avoidance, grief, or heightened emotional investment. These reactions often occur outside of conscious awareness and may create significant clinical challenges when personal experiences begin influencing therapeutic perception or decision-making.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will examine practical and ethically grounded approaches for recognizing and managing family-related countertransference within clinical work. Attendees will explore how attachment histories, unresolved family experiences, emotional wounds, role expectations, and relational patterns influence therapist reactions and shape therapeutic interactions. The course will address common clinical manifestations including rescuing behaviors, emotional distancing, over-identification, excessive frustration, role confusion, and altered clinical boundaries. Participants will learn practical strategies for increasing self-awareness, recognizing emotional activation in real time, utilizing consultation and supervision effectively, and maintaining therapeutic presence without allowing personal history to direct treatment. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for navigating one of psychotherapy’s most common and deeply human countertransference experiences.
Objectives:
Identify how personal family experiences and attachment histories may influence therapist reactions within treatment.
Recognize signs of family-related countertransference that may affect therapeutic perception and clinical decision-making.
Apply practical strategies for self-awareness, consultation, and management of personal reactions within clinical work.
