HIGH-RISK & CLINICAL EDGE CASES
Working With Clients Who Weaponize Therapy Language – 2 CEUs

Overview:
As mental health concepts have become increasingly integrated into mainstream culture and social media, therapists are encountering more clients who use clinical terminology in ways that complicate treatment. Terms such as “gaslighting,” “boundaries,” “narcissist,” “trauma response,” “toxic,” “triggered,” or “holding space” may be used accurately, misunderstood, or strategically applied in ways that justify avoidance, externalize responsibility, reinforce interpersonal conflict, or maintain maladaptive patterns. In some cases, therapeutic language can become a tool for control, defensiveness, relationship power struggles, or resistance within treatment itself. Clinicians are often challenged to address these dynamics without invalidating clients or creating rupture.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will explore practical and clinically grounded approaches for working with clients who use therapeutic language in ways that interfere with insight, accountability, or treatment progress. Attendees will examine the impact of social media psychology trends, self-diagnosis culture, and overpathologizing language on clinical work. The course will address common presentations including misuse of boundaries, overidentification with diagnoses, labeling others through clinical terms, and using therapeutic concepts to avoid vulnerability or accountability. Participants will learn strategies for maintaining curiosity, clarifying meaning, strengthening reflective dialogue, and redirecting conversations toward underlying emotions and relational patterns rather than terminology alone. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for preserving therapeutic alliance while effectively addressing one of modern therapy’s increasingly common clinical challenges.

Objectives:

  1. Identify common ways therapeutic language may be misapplied or used in ways that interfere with treatment progress.

  2. Recognize relational, defensive, and psychological functions underlying the use of weaponized therapy language.

  3. Apply communication and intervention strategies that support accountability, insight, and therapeutic alliance without increasing rupture.
