COUPLES, FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS
Working With Unequal Emotional Investment in Relationships – 3 CEUs

Overview:
Relationship distress frequently emerges when partners experience significant differences in emotional investment, relational effort, or commitment to maintaining the relationship. One partner may consistently pursue connection, initiate repair attempts, prioritize the relationship, and seek emotional closeness, while the other appears more detached, less engaged, emotionally unavailable, or inconsistently invested. These imbalances can create painful cycles of pursuit and withdrawal, resentment, insecurity, emotional exhaustion, and escalating conflict. Therapists working with these couples may feel pressure to determine who cares more, encourage increased investment, or resolve perceived inequities while attempting to maintain neutrality and understand the deeper dynamics driving these patterns.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, participants will explore practical and relational approaches for understanding and treating relationships characterized by unequal emotional investment. Attendees will examine how attachment patterns, family-of-origin experiences, relational trauma, emotional avoidance, personality differences, burnout, and unmet needs may contribute to disparities in engagement and emotional availability. The course will address common clinical presentations including chronic pursuit-withdrawal cycles, emotional over-functioning, relational imbalance, ambivalence, and shifting investment over time. Participants will learn practical strategies for assessing underlying dynamics, avoiding therapist alignment, strengthening emotional communication, and helping partners move beyond surface-level assumptions toward deeper understanding of relational needs and patterns. Through case examples and applied discussion, attendees will gain practical tools for treating one of couples therapy’s most emotionally charged and commonly misunderstood presentations.

Objectives:

  1. Identify relational and psychological factors that contribute to unequal emotional investment within relationships.

  2. Recognize common interaction patterns including pursuit-withdrawal cycles and emotional over-functioning.

  3. Apply practical interventions that support emotional awareness, relational understanding, and balanced therapeutic engagement.
