PRACTICE, SUPERVISION & PROFESSIONAL GROWTH

Clinical Supervision Skills for New Supervisors 3 CEUs

Overview:

Clinical supervision serves as a cornerstone of ethical, competent, and effective mental health practice. Beyond oversight and evaluation, supervision plays a critical role in fostering clinician development, enhancing professional identity, promoting ethical decision-making, and ensuring high-quality client care. Supervisors are tasked with balancing multiple responsibilities, including supporting clinician growth, maintaining professional standards, managing risk, and safeguarding client welfare. Without a strong foundation in supervision theory, supervisory relationships, ethical practice, and competency-based evaluation, supervisors may struggle to effectively guide clinicians through the complex challenges of clinical work.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective clinical supervision across diverse practice settings. Attendees will explore the multifaceted role of the clinical supervisor, including therapeutic, administrative, evaluative, and leadership responsibilities. Emphasis will be placed on building strong supervisory alliances, applying evidence-informed supervision models, navigating ethical and legal challenges, delivering meaningful feedback, supporting clinician wellbeing, and managing difficult supervisory situations. Participants will learn practical strategies to strengthen supervisee competence, promote professional growth, reduce burnout, and improve client outcomes through effective supervision.

  1. Analyze the roles and responsibilities of clinical supervisors, including therapeutic, administrative, evaluative, and leadership functions.

  6. Implement supervisory interventions to support clinicians managing complex clinical presentations, countertransference, burnout, compassion fatigue, and boundary challenges.

  7. Apply culturally responsive and trauma-informed supervisory practices that promote clinician wellbeing, professional competence, and high-quality client care.
