Therapy With High-Achieving & Perfectionistic Clients (2 CEU's)
SPECIAL POPULATIONS & ISSUES
Therapy With High-Achieving & Perfectionistic Clients 2 CEUs
Overview:
High-achieving and perfectionistic clients often present as successful, motivated, and goal-oriented, yet beneath this exterior they may experience chronic stress, anxiety, self-criticism, and a persistent fear of failure. Their drive for excellence can mask underlying vulnerabilities, including low self-worth, rigidity, and difficulty tolerating mistakes or uncertainty. Without a nuanced understanding of perfectionism, clinicians may inadvertently reinforce these patterns or struggle to help clients move beyond surface-level progress.
In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in understanding and effectively treating high-achieving and perfectionistic clients. Attendees will explore the psychological and emotional drivers of perfectionism, including core beliefs, identity factors, and reinforcement patterns that maintain high performance alongside distress. Emphasis will be placed on identifying maladaptive perfectionism, distinguishing it from healthy striving, and understanding how these clients may present uniquely in therapy.
Participants will learn practical, evidence-informed strategies to help clients reduce self-criticism, increase cognitive and emotional flexibility, and develop a more balanced and sustainable approach to achievement. This training will equip clinicians with tools to support deeper therapeutic work, enhance resilience, and help clients move from performance-driven functioning to more authentic and self-compassionate ways of living.
Objectives:
Analyze the psychological and emotional factors that contribute to perfectionism in high-achieving clients.
Differentiate between adaptive achievement and maladaptive perfectionism.
Apply evidence-informed strategies to reduce rigidity, self-criticism, and performance-based identity patterns.
