Working With Chronic Illness & Medical Trauma 3 CEUs

Overview:

Clients living with chronic illness and medical trauma often face complex and overlapping challenges that extend beyond physical symptoms, including emotional distress, identity shifts, loss of control, and strained relationships with medical systems and providers. These experiences can lead to anxiety, depression, trauma responses, and difficulties engaging in both medical and mental health treatment. Without a comprehensive, trauma-informed approach, clinicians may overlook the psychological and relational impact of chronic illness and medical experiences.

In this presentation, Dr. Zairys Feliz, Ph.D., LCSW, will guide participants in understanding and working effectively with clients navigating chronic illness and medical trauma. Attendees will explore the psychological, emotional, and physiological impact of ongoing health conditions and medical interventions, including how trauma can develop within healthcare settings. Emphasis will be placed on integrating trauma-informed care, grief work, and mind-body awareness to support clients in coping with uncertainty, loss, and changes in functioning and identity.

Participants will learn practical, evidence-informed strategies to help clients process medical trauma, improve emotional regulation, enhance communication with healthcare providers, and build resilience while living with chronic conditions. This training will support clinicians in providing more compassionate, effective, and holistic care to a population that is often underserved and misunderstood in mental health settings.

Objectives:

  • Analyze the psychological and emotional impact of chronic illness and medical trauma on clients.

  • Identify trauma responses and adjustment challenges related to medical experiences.

  • Apply trauma-informed and evidence-based strategies to support coping, regulation, and resilience.
